Mobile data traffic shows no sign of slowing down, and Mobile Future member Cisco’s most recent Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast has the numbers to prove it.
According to Cisco, mobile phone usage is expected to outgrow the number of people in the world using bank accounts or even running water. Mobile data traffic will increase 7x what it is today over the course of the next 5 years. Not only will increased mobile connectivity, live mobile video, and the continued spread of the Internet of Things contribute to this rapid growth, but Cisco also predicts that large-scale deployments of 5G infrastructure will result in 25 million 5G capable devices and connections by the following year 2021. With regards to speeds, we are talking 4.7x the traffic than the average 4G connection. Wow!
Some other mobile milestones by by 2021?
- There will be 11.6 billion mobile-connected devices
- The total number of smartphones (including phablets) will amount to over 50% of global devices and connections
- Worldwide, 74.7% of mobile devices will be smart devices
- Mobile video will increase 9-fold between 2016 and 2021, accounting for 78% of total mobile data traffic by the end of the 2021
