Mobile Future

About Connecting Communities

More and more today, Americans in communities from coast to coast rely on wireless services to access a wide range of opportunities – from job prospects and professional networking to education, health care and government services.  All of this is made possible by having the power of the Internet in the palms of our hands – thanks to mobile broadband.

Why We Care
  • Mobile broadband connects rural America. Broadband can open doors for people living in remote areas, whether bringing AP teachers into rural schools or medical specialists into community hospitals.  While 98% of Americans have broadband available to them, wireless is a cost-effective means of helping connect more Americans to the many opportunities mobile broadband makes possible.
  • Minority communities rely heavily on mobile wireless connectivity.  According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, African Americans and Hispanic Americans are adopting connected smartphones at a faster pace than the national average.  This allows for greater economic, civic, and political engagement for these communities and is critical to efforts to close the digital divide.
  • Mobile technologies are improving the lives of millions of Americans with disabilities. Like most of the nation’s consumers, many of the 54 million Americans living with disabilities consider their mobile device to be an indispensable tool in their everyday lives.  Mobile technologies enable people with language- or auditory-based disabilities to communicate easier, and people with vision-based disabilities more easily access visual materials.  Embedding these tools in a smartphone also allows those living with disabilities, especially younger individuals, to avoid social stigmas that too often accompany use of specialized assistive devices.

Our Bottom Line

Mobile broadband has the ability to enhance economic opportunities, expand access to education, and improve the quality of life for all Americans.  Government agencies should make an effort to ensure more of their essential public services are accessible in the mobile broadband environment.  We as a nation also must maintain pro-investment policies that encourage state-of-the-art networks, make additional wireless spectrum capacity available to expand mobile services, and encourage innovative collaborations to realize wireless’ full potential to meet the needs of Americans in every corner of the nation.
