Mobile Future

About Economic Opportunity

Continued investment in our mobile future is critical to our nation’s economic growth.  The transition from 2G to 3G wireless networks created 1.5 million new jobs.  Now our nation is leading the world into the super-fast 4G future.  Mobile innovation creates jobs throughout our economy, including applications developers, device makers, network engineers and entrepreneurs who leverage mobile connectivity to grow their businesses.

Why We Care
  • Mobile broadband means American jobs and economic growth. Today, mobile innovation supports more than 3.8 million American jobs. Adding 500 MHz of spectrum has the potential to create 500,000 more American jobs across the U.S. economy and contribute $400 billion to the nation’s GDP.
  • Mobile is creating whole new segments of our economy. In 2007, mobile apps didn’t exist. Five years later in 2012, they are an $18 billion industry – and are expected to be a $46 billion market by 2016. The rise of the “apps economy” has created over half a million jobs—and counting. Similarly mobile innovation is reshaping many other leading sectors of our economy, from health care to connected cars. In fact, by the year 2020, 90 percent of new cars will be wirelessly connected, making it the largest category of connected devices and services.
  • Our mobile economy depends on continued investment and innovation. Wireless companies are investing more than $25 billion annually in U.S. mobile infrastructure. As the government makes more spectrum available, it is essential to keep in mind the billions of dollars in ongoing investment that are necessary to keep our nation’s wireless infrastructure state of the art. Today, the U.S. leads the world in advanced 4G network deployment and adoption. Pro-investment policies are essential to help ensure our country maintains this significant competitive edge in the global information economy.
Our Bottom Line

America deserves a mobile future that is defined by perpetual innovation, job creation and economic growth. Policies that encourage vigorous private sector investment are key to the continued competitiveness of the U.S. wireless sector and its ability to keep both innovation and economic opportunities flowing to us all.
