Mobile Future Statement on FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski’s Departure

WASHINGTON, DC – FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski today announced his exit from the Commission after nearly four years of service. The following statement should be attributed to Jonathan Spalter, chairman of Mobile Future:

A fundamental challenge of our economy – and for American innovation – is to ensure that our citizens now and in the future will have access to spectrum.   Julius Genachowski saw from his first day as chairman that the FCC could be a vigorous catalyst not only for achieving real progress towards this goal – but he also knew that part of his task would be to put spectrum higher on the public policy agenda by giving this highly technical and invisible phenomenon real form, meaning, and urgency: not only for policy makers across the country but consumers as well.    With relentless focus, he and his talented team have helped America not only understand that spectrum is a profound household need, but they also have helped it become a household word.

We’ve still much work before us to achieve our spectrum goals as a nation.  So too does our government, as it looks ahead to implementing successful incentive auctions, reallocating under-utilized government spectrum for consumer uses, and getting 500 MHZ of additional wireless spectrum into the hands of our citizens, our schools, hospitals, businesses and communities.

Still, in his effort to put spectrum at the very top of our nation’s technology policy priorities, Julius Genachowski’s achievements as Chairman will be enduring.  Our nation – and those of us who care deeply about the future of our innovation economy – owe him a debt of gratitude for his vision, and for his public service.

I wish him well in the days ahead as he begins his next professional adventures.
