Mary Meeker Report: Key Insights Into Global Internet + Smartphone Use

June 6, 2016

It’s time for another edition of Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends Report.  This year, Meeker finds that Americans spend about five hours per day perusing their on average 37 apps and smartphone usage is increasing at an incredible rate for everything including camera, storytelling, creativity, messaging, and sharing. Did you know? 10–20 million Snapchatters view live stories each day and that more users watched college football and the MTV Music Awards on Snapchat than on TV. Not only are we increasingly using our smartphones, brands and companies are doing the same to get consumers’ attention.  Meeker finds that mobile ads grew by 66% and is expected to continue to rise in the future.

Other key takeaways from the report include statistics about what future smartphones will look like. Over time, messaging apps could overtake the home screen on mobile devices, given how much smartphone users utilize messaging apps to communicate. These include WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and WeChat. Can’t get enough of Siri or can’t stand her? Meeker predicts that consumers will increasingly rely on voice interaction services to get through the day as speech recognition technology reaches 99% accuracy.
