MYIR: Mobile Year in Review

December 29, 2016

Mobile Future just released our 2016 Mobile Year in Review video (yay!). And one of the many awe-inspiring trends in this year’s mobile tech space   was the explosion of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). A quick mobile fact check from our video: VR users will grow 4x in number by 2018. So, as we gear up for that boom, let’s take a look at what VR and AR brought you in 2016.

Samsung, a Mobile Future member, was one of the first tech companies to bring you a consumer-ready VR headset with the Gear VR. All you need to do is slot in your mobile device and a whole new world literally appears before your eyes.  Samsung also has embraced consumer appetite for VR and offers dozens of virtual games.  Even Netflix and the NBA joined in, with the NBA streaming one game a week to its VR app. Meanwhile,  gaming headsets like the HTC Vive and PlayStation VR turn you into everything from a Star Wars rebel to a wizard for a full immersive VR experience. Even without a headset, your mobile device is introducing you to new realities.  App features like Snapchat and Facebook’s photo filters turn  you and your friends into animals, fairy princesses, or creepy Halloween skeletons. And one of the biggest apps of 2016, Pokémon Go, turns your bedroom and city into a Pokémon-land. Simply pull out your mobile device to see Pikachu or Rattata hiding in plain sight.

These new realities bring us  biking glasses with a transparent display, tours of famous museums and parks, and new ideas to help old health issues. So as 2016 comes to a close, let’s get excited for another innovative year of mobile tech realities!
