WASHINGTON, D.C. – Late Thursday, the U.S. Senate approved the appointment of Julius Genachowski as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and returned Robert McDowell to a second term as a commissioner. The following statement should be attributed to Jonathan Spalter, Chairman of the Mobile Future coalition.
"Julius will make an excellent leader of the FCC as it tackles issues critical to our nation’s prosperity and competitiveness such as the development of the national broadband plan, in which mobile communications will play a crucial role. His background not only in public service but in the private sector will equip him well to shape policies that serve consumers, stimulate industry growth and innovation, create jobs and address the continued expansion of wireless and broadband capabilities throughout the nation.
"We also congratulate Commissioner McDowell on his confirmation for a new term at the Commission. His insight, along with that of Commissioner Michael Copps, will provide continuity and experience as the FCC enters a period of transformation.
"We urge the Senate to move quickly in filling the remaining two vacancies so that the Commission can act decisively in setting policy that keeps pace with the rapid changes in technology and the communications industry."
