Mobile Future Files Comments in FCC “Wireless Innovation” Review

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mobile Future today filed a white paper with the Federal Communications Commission providing comments in the agency’s review of the wireless ecosphere and the necessary ingredients for innovation and investment in the mobile arena.

The report, “Welcome to the Mobile Future: How Wireless Innovation is Transforming Our Economy & Our Lives,” shows how the public sector and innovators in the wireless space have collaborated and cooperated over the past 26 years to deliver on the promise of multiple mobile choices for consumers; and provides data and historical context to inform the FCC’s analysis of the factors that facilitate innovation and investment in wireless.

The white paper also provides vivid examples of the ways that wireless capabilities have been adopted to benefit consumers in the areas of public safety, health care, education and energy.

In its comments, Mobile Future advocates four cornerstones of public policy:

  • New investment is necessary to bring 4G capabilities to Americans at prices they can afford, and should be encouraged — not deterred — by sound government policy;
  • Innovation should be driven primarily by consumers, not government;
  • Policymakers need to recognize and support  the critical role mobile innovation can play in promoting broadband access;
  • It is important to broaden the community of stakeholders engaged in promoting mobile innovation.

“With consumers driving innovation and investment in the wireless space, mobile services have developed in ways never imagined twenty-five years ago,” said Mobile Future Chairman Jonathan Spalter. “Looking ahead, policymakers must move judiciously in the wireless sector to avoid disrupting or delaying progress and innovation for mobile consumers.”
