New Report Points to Operational and Engineering Consequences of Net Neutrality Regulations for Wire

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mobile Future today released a new report assessing the implications of potential network neutrality regulations on wireless consumers and the networks which support them.

The report, “Net Neutrality Regulatory Proposals: Operational and Engineering Implications for Wireless Networks and the Consumers They Serve,” provides an important technical perspective on the impact net neutrality regulatory proposals will have on the wireless services consumers demand and operators provide.

Published with network engineer Peter Rysavy of Rysavy Research, the analysis outlines key innovations in technology that are driving improvements in wireless network capacity; details on wireless network performance constraints; trends in wireless data consumption and how these consumption demands threaten to overwhelm capacity. This report also reviews the technical options currently available to wireless network operators to avoid network overload and the means by which they can stay ahead of capacity constraints.

“Today’s wireless and mobile computing industry represents one of the greatest achievements of all time,” said Mobile Future Chairman Jonathan Spalter. “Wireless networks, however, are extremely constrained in capacity. It is crucial that operators of wireless networks have access to a heightened degree of technical flexibility and autonomy to adequately support consumer demand.”

From an operational and engineering perspective, the report concludes that the imposition of several of the net neutrality proposals in the Federal Communications Commission’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on the Open Internet across the wireless ecosystem are fraught with systemic uncertainty, and run an extremely high risk of engineering and operational consequences.
