Mobile Future member Ericsson released its November Mobility Report, looking at key findings and predictions for the future of mobile.
In the report, Ericsson delves into the continuing boom of smartphone subscriptions. Ericsson predicts that between 2016 and 2022, smartphone subscriptions will nearly double to 6.8 billion worldwide. What’s a big factor? Commercial 5G networks are expected to be available beginning in 2020. Ericsson believes that the introduction of 5G t will not only enhance current broadband services, but also enable more uses of the Internet of Things.
Here are some exciting stats from the new report looking at smartphone subscriptions and 5G in the future:
– Smartphone subscriptions will rise from 3.9 billion in 2016 to 6.8 billion in 2020
– 550 million of those subscribers will be on 5G in 2022, compared to 150 million in 2021
– 25% of the 5G subscribers in 2022 will be in North America
– 70% of wide-area Internet of Things devices will use cellular technology in 2022
